i am writing this review using the slide out key board. So far this is pretty cool to use and take some time to get use to the functios but i am happy to use it! can't wait to show it off at work.

I love this tablet. It's the coolest thing I've bought myself in years. Other tablets are nice for reading and web surfing, but when it comes to typing, they get cramped.

I go to college, and one class has the textbook, lecture notes, and homework online. I need something with the battery life of a Netbook, but without having to wait for apps to load. The Slider wakes up when I slide it open and connects to the network in seconds. I can download the Power Point presentation for the day as fast as the net allows, open it with Polaris Office, included, and save my notes to Asus web storage. After class I had a question on the homework and my teacher wanted to see the problem. I didn't have to login on the class computer, I just showed her the tablet. With a slide out keyboard I can take notes, use a spreadsheet, and research topics discussed during class like a notebook computer but without the awkwardness and short battery life.

Functionally this tablet fits nicely between my phone and my home computer. It is a little thicker and heavier than other tablets, but I don't think I'll notice unless I'm hiking for a week in the wilderness and need to trim weight. It's just under 1" thick and a little over 2 pounds, so these comparisons are a little trivial.

Asus has maintained its reputation for high quality with this tablet, from the screen right down to the audio out. They added a few of there own apps and widgets. MyZine is starting to grow on me. Asus Web storage, available with its netbooks is here. There is a photo browser that connects to your Picasa web album. Then there is MyDesktop. Download the server software to your PC and when you connect to it, the tablet turns into your PC desktop. You can access drives, run all your windows apps and play music from your tablet. Admin your net from the break room anyone?

There are also the external ports. I was blown away when I found the USB port supports an external mouse and keyboard. This combined with the mini HDMI makes a very useful tablet.

Cons:
-Slide out keyboard prevents a silicon protective case
-Doesn't make coffee :(

I've had this tablet for a week and I'm still buzzed.

I was waiting for this form factor for a long time. Ever since I saw this tablet announced at CES I knew I wanted it. For a very long time I've thought that netbooks should come with a touch screen and a dedicated touch screen OS. That is basically what the eee pad slider is.

OK, so why don't I start with what I like:

1) The touch display. It is bright, clear and responsive.
2) Honeycomb is awesome--Google has hit a homerun with this OS. I recommend getting the tablet version of the Opera browser.
3) The form factor. I love the notion of a tablet that folds out into a pseudo-netbook. I think it bridges the two markets into one.

And, what I don't like:

1) The keyboard. The slide out keyboard ought to be a main selling point of the slider! But it isn't. It is flimsy and requires a really hard keypress to register. If I try to type too fast it will consistently miss letters that I hit too lightly. The feedback of the keys is really bad and there is a lot of flex in the keyboard tray. It is just bad.
2) The fixed 45 degree angle. This isn't so bad if you use the slider at a desk (like in a meeting or in a class). The viewing angles are also really good so that mitigates this problem. However, that fixed 45 degree angle does limit where you can comfortably use the slider.
3) The speakers. They are really bad. They're buried under the screen so that they are muffled when the keyboard is not extended. And even when the keyboard is slid out the speakers are still worse than my Droid X (which is like 1/10th the size of the slider).

Overall I really can't recommend this item unless you really are a gadget nut. The lousy slide out keyboard and the lack of usable sound is going to really frustrate you. However, I think that Asus is on the right track here. The 'eee pad slider 2' might fix these glaring problems and would yield a really nice form factor for people who need a device that is good for work and school and not just surfing webpages. If they improved the keyboard I could literally add two stars to this review. But the main reason to have this is the slide out keyboard and that part is really poorly made. So you wind up with a very heavy tablet because you don't want to bother to struggle with the slide out keyboard. That's silly.
